A photographic project by Wataru Murakami
The works exhibited at Wataru Murakami's first solo exhibition at Anna Klinkhammer Gallery demonstrate his ongoing artistic and photographic exploration of the still life as a genre.¬¬
In this project, he appreciates the still life as a genre that reflects its long tradition. In painting, the still life is often attributed with a rather "low" status within the hierarchy of the artistic genres. Furthermore, Murakami draws on the history of still life photography, in which the image if often used to represent consumer goods and their production methods. In the ubiquitous imagery of advertising photography, the still life has become a fetishized image that enacts the ritual of object possession.
Murakami has been producing a series of small books titled Still Life #1 – 13. The books were produced in a diary-like sequence and comprise his photographic works from 2008 until present. Based on his still life series, Murakami developed diverse ways of exhibition formats in which he reflects aspects such as photographic production, composition and presentation. Here, a key interest of Murakami's is the question of visual layers in space. This process has initiated the development of a new understanding of still life as a genre that discovers a very private definition of "the presence of beauty." Within the commercial context of object acquisition, Murakami searches for particular instances of the blind spot of beauty.
